1.          Students throughout France readied(準備好) for a new day of street protests Thursday, and kept up(繼續) steady pressure on the government to withdraw a law that will allow companies to hire and fire youths more easily.

2.          The government yesterday introduced measures to reduce Taiwan's economic reliance on (依賴)China, toughen rules governing investment in the mainland and crack down on(嚴懲) smuggling, according to the Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council.

3.          China and Russia on Wednesday made strides(向前跨一步) toward investing in each other's huge energy markets, taking the first concrete steps towards long-touted(强力推銷) oil and gas pipelines and promising to further deepen energy ties(加强兩國能源闊係).

4.          A Romanian mayor is under fire(遭受攻擊) after he spent £10,000 on staging(舉辦) a party with male strippers(脫衣舞男) to mark(慶祝) Women's Day. Lucian Iliescu, the Mayor of Giurgiu, decided to spend public money(浪費公帑) laying on(籌劃) the treat(招待) for his female employees on March 8.

5.         Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou,55, seen by many as the opposition's best bet for victory in the 2008 polls, has said he would reopen talks and aim to sign a peace agreement with China if his party regained power in the next presidential election.

6.          "The people of Taiwan elect their own president, parliament and manage their own affairs. Legally, it already is a sovereign independent country(主權獨立國家) and there is no need to declare independence a (second) time," Ma Ying-jeou said.

7.          Oscar-winning Taiwanese film director Ang Lee(李安) told the KMT leader that he was touched to hear that Ma went to see the film with his mother. He also said he was pleased to see the Taiwan government gave the film a more moderate rating than the U.S., which gave the film a "R" rating(限制級). He told Ma Brokeback Mountain was a love story.

8.          President Chen Shui-bian yesterday reiterated his pledge(重申他的承諾) not to push for the island's independence(不推動台灣獨立) as he tried to patch up ties(修補關係) with the United States after scrapping the government's unification line.  "I would like to say again that my previous pledge to the U.S. government and President Bush (not to push for independence) has not changed," Chen told Stephen Young(美國在台協會台北辦事處處長楊甦棣), Washington's new envoy to Taipei.

9.          North Korea has more than 800 ballistic missiles(彈道飛彈), some of which could deliver chemical or possibly biological weapons, the California-based Center for Nonproliferation Studies (禁止武器擴散研究中心CNS) said in its report on North Korea's capabilities.

10.      Three years ago President Bush ordered American-led coalition forces to invade Iraq. One goal was to free the Iraqi people. The other was to prevent Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from using weapons of great destruction. The United States believed Iraq had such weapons. The Iraqi government was ousted(趕下台). But weapons of great destruction were never found.
