1.          A British school on Friday became the first in the country to make learning the Mandarin Chinese language(華語) compulsory(强迫的), saying(=and said) it was facing up to(面對) the challenge of the 21st century (9/9, China Post)

4.          Demonstrators have gathered in Taiwan's capital for a second day to demand the resignation of President Chen Shui-bian over corruption allegations. Bush was to travel Sunday to New York for two public events commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.  The visit comes as the president's administration defends the invasion of Iraq despite(that) persistent questions about any evidence of a link to the attacks. 6.          Premier Su Tseng-chang(蘇貞昌) and Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou(馬英九) attended an event yesterday sponsored by the Buddhist Dharma Drum Mountain (法鼓山DDM) Foundation to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. (世界防止自殺日)Addressing the occasion, Su said his brother-in-law killed himself by jumping from his office in a high-rise building in Taipei last month. (9/11, China Post)

7.          China's open policy to foreign media(外國媒體) and financial information agencies(金融資訊機構) remains unchanged and the government will protect their freedom and rights, China's Premier Wen Jiabao(溫家寶) said on Wednesday. (9/14, China Post)

8.          A sea of red ribbons(一片紅潮), looking like furious fire besieging the adjacent Presidential Office, was found tied around the Kaitakelan Boulevard(凱達格大道) early yesterday morning. This was done by over one thousand protesters overnight,based on the brainchild of Fan Ke-chin(范可欽的創意), a renowned ad creator(知名的廣告才子).  Protesters have been demanding the resignation of President Chen Shui-bian, who has been plagued(纏身) by a spate of(很多的) corruption scandals(貪污醜聞). 9.          More than 10,000 South Korean riot policemen(鎮暴警察) with shields and batons(盾牌與警棍) dislodged(驅逐) about 50 residents and activists from homes on Wednesday during a protest over the expansion(擴充) of a U.S. military base.  The protesters painted "NO USA" on buildings and stood on rooftops in a brief attempt to stop construction crews(工地勞工) from tearing down(拆除) about 90 homes. 10.      South Korea's National Human Rights Commission(國家人權委員會) called Wednesday for an end to what it termed discrimination against Chinese schools.  Because such schools are not officially recognized(官方承認), their pupils must pass state examinations(通過國家考試) to move to Korean schools or to enter higher educational institutions(大專院校).  "It constitutes(構成) a breach(違反) of the Chinese residents' rights to receive education in their own language. It amounts to (等同)discrimination," the rights commission said in its ruling(裁定).(9/14, China Post)
