1.          Tens of thousands of Taiwanese have taken to the streets(走上街頭) of the capital, Taipei, in support of their embattled(嚴陣以待的) President, Chen Shui-bian. The protest was organised to counter(反制) a demonstration on Friday demanding Mr Chen's resignation.(9/16, BBC)

2.          The rally was organised by the pro-government Taiwan Group, but reports say Mr Chen's DPP issued an emergency order(緊急命令) to mobilise party members(動員黨員) nationwide. The party organised buses to bring supporters to the capital. (9/16, BBC)

3.           China will increase its peacekeeping presence in Lebanon(黎巴嫩) to 1,000 troops, Premier Wen Jiabao(温家寳) has confirmed. The move would make China one of the largest contributors to a strengthened UN force designed to keep the peace(維和). (9/18, BBC)

4.          Ten Nigerian(奈及利亞的) generals were among 12 people killed in a plane crash in the West African country, an air force spokesman said Monday. (9/18, CNN)

5.          The leader of the military coup(軍事政變) in Thailand has said a new prime minister will be named within two weeks.  Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin(宋提將軍) told a news conference that new elections would take place in a year's time, once a new constitution had been written.(9/20, BBC)

6.          The military is back in power in Thailand after ousting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra(戴克辛總理) in a bloodless coup(不流血政變) Tuesday. The military says the coup was necessary to unite a nation  split by months of political turmoil. But the return of the military is being viewed with unease(不安=uneasiness) in Thailand, and abroad.(9/20, VOA)

7.          Japan's ruling party has chosen top government spokesman Shinzo Abe(內閣官房長官安倍晉三) as its next leader, and the country's most likely next prime minister.  The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP日本自民黨) voted by 464, out of 703 votes, for Mr Abe to succeed current Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi(小泉純一郎). 8.          A British soldier facing court martial in Britain has pleaded guilty(認罪) to committing the war crime of treating detainees inhumanely while serving(省略子句,while後省he was serving), in Iraq. He is one of seven British soldiers charged in the 2003 death of an Iraqi hotel receptionist held in British custody in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. (9/20, VOA)

9.          Red-clad anti-corruption protesters(反貪腐者) in southern Taiwan were attacked again last night after police failed to fend off(未能隔開) brutal assaults(暴力攻擊) from supporters of President Chen Shui-bian.  The protesters started staging the sit-in(靜坐) at the square on Zhonghua West Road(中華西路) in front of the Tainan City Council(台南市議會) to demand for the resignation of President Chen (9/20, China Post)

10.      Police arrested 15 supporters of President Chen Shui-bian for disturbing the peace in Tainan and Pingtung(屏東), where thousands of others rallied against two anti-graft sit-ins (反貪靜坐) yesterday. Heavy-handed police action(警察强力作為), a demarche(法文:處置) ordered by National Police Agency director-general Hou Yu-ih(警政署長候友宜), prevented bloodshed(流血) that marred the two previous sit-ins in Tainan and Kaohsiung.
