1.          A surge(遽增) in violence made St. Louis(聖路易市) the most dangerous city in the country, leading a trend of violent crimes rising much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to an annual list. (10/30,CNN)

2.          President George W. Bush launches a final drive on Thursday to try to help Republicans(共和黨人) maintain control of the U.S. Congress(繼續掌控國會), arguing(=and argued) that the United States must stay in Iraq despite the war's unpopularity.  "I think most Republicans understand that if we were to leave before the job is done, America will be less secure." 3.          Human error has been blamed on a slight derailment of Taiwan High-Speed Rail train in Kaohsiung, with a transport official saying it was a "good thing" for the accident to occur during testing. Transport minister Tsai Duei(交通部長蔡堆) blamed Tuesday's derailment(出軌) of the locomotive of a 12-car train on human error, stressing that there was no problem with the system itself. 4.          Israeli forces backed by tanks killed seven Palestinians including five militants on Wednesday and one soldier was also killed in one of the heaviest Israeli raids into the Gaza Strip(拉薩走廊) in months.  Israeli soldiers entered northern Gaza before dawn and fighting quickly erupted around the town of Beit Hanoun, followed by air strikes and tank shelling. 5.          Three Palestinians have been killed in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza on the second day of a major Israeli operation, hospital officials say.  Eight Palestinians --including five militants - and an Israeli soldier died during clashes on Wednesday. (11/02, BBC)

6.          The former president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, has branded US attempts to impose(強迫接受) Western-style democracy(西方式民主) in the Middle East as "a great joke"(天大的笑話).  Mr Khatami was critical of the US-led military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, which (he said) had led to more Muslims supporting al-Qaeda(). 7.          China has granted formal permission for Hong Kong to run a customs and immigration checkpoint(海關與移民檢查站) on Chinese soil(國土). The news has been welcomed by Hong Kong's trade and transport circles(), and is a sign of growing links between the territory(指香港) and southern China. (11/02, BBC)

8.          Tensions between Iran and western powers are high as the latter try to agree a draft U.N. sanctions resolution aimed at forcing Tehran to scale back(減縮) atomic work they fear may be used to make bombs. Iran says its aims are purely peaceful. (11/02,CNN)

9.           Iranian state television says the country's Revolutionary Guards have test-fired several long-range missiles with the capability of carrying cluster bombs(母子彈).The state-owned Al-Alam network says the missiles were launched Thursday from a desert site near the central Iranian town of Qom. 10.      Venezuela and Guatemala(委內瑞拉、瓜地馬拉) have ended their battle for an open(開放的) U.N. Security Council seat from Latin America. Both countries agreed to withdraw in favor of Panama.  The breakthrough came late Wednesday, after talks between the Venezuelan and Guatemalan foreign ministers. (11/02,VOA)
