1.          Two prominent Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers resigned yesterday, just 10 days before the Legislative Yuan(立法院) is scheduled to vote on a third motion to recall President Chen Shui-bian. Lee Wen-chung(李文忠), legislator from the county of Taipei, and Lin Cho-shui(林濁水), one at large(legislator-at-large不分區立委) and the DPP theoretician(理論家), cited as the reason for their resignation their party's unwavering support(堅決的支持) for a president mired deeply in a corruption scandal. 2.          In a joint statement, the two legislators told a press conference they had to quit to live up to the high moral standard they had set for themselves and President Chen in the conduct of affairs of state. Two MPs (members of parliament) from Taiwan's ruling party have quit parliament in protest at the way the party has handled corruption claims against President Chen Shui-bian.  The moves by Lee Wen-chung and Lin Cho-shui are the first major divisions in the Democratic Progressive Party, which has so far backed Mr Chen.(11/13, BBC)

4.          Gunmen in Iraq dressed as police commandos(突擊隊) have kidnapped as many as 100 people during a lightning raid(閃電突擊) on a Baghdad research institute(研究單位). Authorities say at least three people were later released. It is believed to be the largest mass abduction(集體劫持) since the start of the conflict. (11/14, VOA)

5.          The US navy has confirmed reports of a close encounter(近距離接觸) between one of its battle groups(航艦戰鬥群) and a Chinese submarine in the Pacific late last month.  US Pacific Commander Admiral William Fallon (美國太平洋艦隊司令法隆) said the incident had had the potential to escalate(擴大). (11/15, BBC)

6.          A small 40-centimeter (16-inch) tsunami(海嘯) hit northern Japan after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake () shook the Russian-owned Kuril islands on Wednesday, according to Japan's Meteorological Agency. Residents along Japan's Pacific coast were told to flee the tsunami after the quake hit at 8:14 p.m. (1114 GMT) deep under the Pacific Ocean about 1,700 kilometers (1,000 miles) northeast of Tokyo. 7.          Former senator(前參議員) and military officer Gregorio Honasan(洪納山), who is accused of involvement in February's failed coup against Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, has been arrested after evading police(躲避警察) for much of the year. Honasan has a long history of involvement in coup plots(政變陰謀)going back to the ouster of dictator Ferdinand Marcos. (11/15, VOA)

8.          A powerful earthquake(強震) with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1(芮氏規模八點一) rocked several remote islands off northern Japan on Wednesday, prompting thousands to evacuate(疏散) to higher ground amid tsunami alerts(海嘯預警). 9.          One of four U.S. soldiers accused of raping and killing a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and killing her family, pleaded guilty(認罪) Wednesday in a Kentucky military court(軍事法庭). James P. Barker also agreed to testify against (對不利作證) the others charged(其他的被告), a plea deal(交易) that helps him avoid the death penalty (11/16, CNN)

10.      US President George W Bush has stressed(强調)he need for Asian leaders to back(支持) an Asia Pacific free trade zone(亞太自由貿易區), during a speech in Singapore. Mr Bush, who is heading to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in Vietnam(越南), said the idea needed "serious consideration".
